Chinese Brush Painting Society of San Diego

The Chinese Brush Painting Society of San Diego (CBPS) proudly presents the artworks of the Society’s member artists. The artwork in the show is created using traditional brush strokes and tools of this ancient art form – rice paper, ink, Chinese watercolors, and animal hairbrushes. The paintings depict both traditional and contemporary subjects using various painting styles, highlighting the diversity and breadth of techniques used by modern brush artists. Exhibitors include artists of all levels, many of whom have studied with Masters in China.

Chinese brush painting is a highly valued ink and watercolor art form that originated in ancient China and has been preserved in its traditional form throughout history. Chinese brush painting emphasizes perfecting brush strokes in concert with the artist’s spirit and considers white space an important part of the painting to create balance, simplicity, and serenity. Chinese Calligraphy (Chinese characters) and Chinese seals (chops) are used to title and sign the artwork.

This year’s show is dedicated to Master Teacher Jean Shen (1939- 2020) who taught her students to paint with their spirit.
