Rocks and mountains, fields and paths, flowers, corals, fish, birds, and animals become design elements in artist Holly Given’s large, colorful oil paintings. Working in the representational space with a vague destination in mind, Given arranges and rearranges features, shapes, colors, and lighting on the canvas to arrive at a finished composition that conveys an overall sense of beauty and joy. An oil painter in childhood, Holly Given followed a passion for the natural world to graduate studies in geoscience and a decades-long career managing international science and technology programs. She completed the UCSD Extended Studies curriculum in Art and the Creative Process in 2018. Recently retired from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, she lives in La Jolla with her husband, John Sequeira.
