Clay Harris: Digital Artist’s Profile

I’ve done a lot in my life. I played in a rock and roll band. Played college football. Designed, built and developed all types of real estate. Lived on an island. Built and ran a marina. All the while producing images. I started out in photography around nine years of age with my own dark room. I was always experimenting with double negatives, double exposures and such. In the eighties, I purchased my first digital camera and started exploring computer art. I had seen a digital images that Andy Warhol had generated of his friend and I said to myself, I can do that. That led to three decades of the pursuit of the perfect digital image. Digital imaging in the early days was like putting together a ten-piece puzzle. Today the puzzles are much more complex.

All the way back to my childhood, I was immersed in nature. Growing up in rural West Florida, I was surrounded by nature. I am very much influenced by nature and all her beautiful colors. In my college design classes, I was taught about two point and three point perspectives and how to create depth of fields for realistic drawings. As a young scholar, I was also told that certain colors did not go together. Colors like blue and green clashed and did not go together! I could never understand that? The grass is green, and the sky is blue, and it is beautiful! The point of this is that I always seemed to go my own way and I believe this is reflected in my images.

For decades, I’ve been passionate about composite imaging. Painting an image over the top of another images to create a story from my mind’s eye. The artistic nature of my composite images has allowed me to utilize my imagination to produce images that take me on a journey. The same imagination that used to take me on a journey and get me in trouble in grade school. Perhaps these images take you on a journey as well.

I have reached that point in the circle of life where I am more reflective. They have a saying back where I come from, “even a blind squirrel can find a nut every now and then”. I have collected quite a few nuts in my lifetime and want to share them. I hope you will find pleasure in my images and they stir your imagination.
