Invitation To A Journey

This solo show of evocative artwork presents paintings, jewelry, mobiles and stabiles. Carlsbad-based Christina Rosenthal grew up in a family of artists, studied at Otis Institute of Art, and spent years in Los Angeles as a set designer and artist. She has done commissioned work for Hollywood entertainment industry luminaries such as Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Steven Spielberg and Steve Martin. Since relocating to Carlsbad in 1997 Rosenthal has continued developing her individual voice as a fine artist. Her recent work has shown at The Oceanside Museum of Art Biennial where she won third place, the Studio Door (the Crow Show) and the Small Image Show at Gallery 21.
A world traveler, Rosenthal finds being immersed in the art and culture of other countries has contributed to her world view and enriched her artistic vocabulary. She is comfortable working in many different media, including oil, acrylic, ink, graphite or spray paint on canvas, collage, textiles, sculptures and found object assemblages. Mid-Century Modern artists are one source of inspiration for her. Nature and animals are another. Her balanced
and mature paintings display a remarkable sense of color and form as well as technical virtuosity. She combines alternatively bold exuberance and serene meditation. Her painting style is often open and gestural, and just as often deliberate and detail-oriented. The paintings seem like people who have lived long and well. They are complex, intriguing, fun or serious. The more one gets to know them the more one sees and enjoys, from the brilliant contrasting colors to the curious small visual treasures scattered about in abundance.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Deborah Williams, formerly of Fresh Paint Gallery in La Jolla. There will be hands-on art and greeting card activities on July 8th and 9th; and Christina will be painting on site on July 10th. There will be a drawing for one painting at the closing reception.
